One of the hidden gems of the summer was the second season of The Umbrella Academy. Have you heard about it yet?
What Is It?
The Umbrella Academy is not your typical troupe of superheroes. The Primetime Emmy nominated series is a Netflix original, based on a Dark Horse Comics series created by former My Chemical Romance frontman, Gerard Way. The graphic novel series tells the story of a family of seven adoptive former child heroes that grew apart over their early adult years but must reunite to protect the world from an apocalyptic doom. The series includes a talking chimpanzee assistant, a robotic mother, an eccentric monocled billionaire father, and of course, dysfunctional family fun and drama.
Why We Love It
The Netflix live-action adaptation of season two picks up right after the events of the previous season’s ending. (SPOILER ALERT) The Hargreeves siblings find themselves sent back into the 1960s, but not all at the same time. Each sibling had landed in the same location in Dallas, Texas, but inadvertently a year apart from one another. This season explores the members of the Umbrella Academy dealing with finding each other, the racial inequalities of the time, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and being hunted by a trio of Swedish assassins while trying to prevent another apocalyptic end to the world in ten days.
The cinematography, witty dialogue, and unique storyline make this series an enjoyable fun watch. It also doesn’t hurt that the ten-episode season is accompanied by a great soundtrack including Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, a soulful cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”, KISS’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”, and even a Swedish cover of Adele’s “Hello”.
Currently, there’s no word for a third season, but with the series being one of Netflix’s biggest breakout hits, I’m positively sure we’ll get more screen time of the Hargreeves siblings. Until then, there’s time to binge and catch-up with season’s one and two streaming on Netflix.
